We are a group of people who have been touched by Celiac in one way or another. Some of us have Celiac, some of us are parents, spouses or friends of a Celiac sufferer. However we came to the Celiac community, we have all had the same frustrations in trying to live a gluten-free lifestyle. McHenry Celiac Support Group was formed out of that frustration and together we can help each other to live a happy, productive, gluten-free lifestyle.
Being gluten-free goes way beyond the "stay away from bread, beer and pasta" that the medical community tells us after diagnosis. There is little help from the medical community on how to actually live a gluten-free lifestyle and many nutritionists are still not educated on Celiac Disease. We are basically thrown into the confusing world of reading food labels and allergen statements, learning new words for wheat, and having to learn where to shop. Words such as "glutenated" and phrases like "accidental glutenization" will become part of your vocabulary now.
Don't panic! We are here to help. |
